This off-grid retreat in central Victoria features expansive 360-degree views. The bold geometric form of this building is the perfect addition to the stark surrounding landscape.
Such a highly exposed location presented unique challenges. Ben Callery Architects identified that the winds blow almost exclusively from the north or south, so Sliding Doors were specified to promote thorough ventilation. The wind speed for the site was calculated at N3 – at the higher end of non-cyclonic ratings – which necessitated heavy duty mullions and interlockers for the required integrity. Furthermore, the considered drainage methodology effectively expels wind driven rain.
The bedroom makes the most of the scenery courtesy of a large Fixed Lite picture window with offset Double Hung ventilation. This product frames existing vegetation whilst harnessing solar gains.
This building is in a bushfire prone location, and fire safety was of mandatory consideration. All products are compliant with the BAL29 bushfire rating – including frame materials, glass type and screen specification. Rylock screens are always manufactured from extruded aluminium for strength and longevity, but for BAL application stainless steel mesh
replaces fiberglass.
For more demanding requirements, Rylock offers a Bushfire Series of windows and doors tested by the CSIRO for BAL40 conditions.
