Information Sheet

Rylock Architectural Aluminium Series Double Hung Windows feature a narrow profile where top and bottom sashes move simultaneously for warm air to be expelled through the top, whilst cool air is drawn through below. The openable sashes are controlled by acrylic handles for minimal visual attention, in a slender frame profile that invites the outside in. A key lock (in a stainless steel housing), can be engaged in a fully closed or vent-locked position to safely allow trickle ventilation into the home.

Multiple sash seals ensure resistance against air and water infiltration for exceptional results in AS 2047 Windows and External Glazed Doors compliance testing and Double Hung Windows are glazed in accordance with AS 1288 Glass in Buildings. Whilst a large range of options are available, all products are glazed with Grade A Safety Toughened Low-e Double Glazing (Argon Fill) as a standard specification.

FAQs:
Frequently Asked Questions About Double Hung Windows

What are double hung windows?

Double Hung Windows have a counter balance mechanism that allows the top and bottom sashes to open at the same time. High quality windows are easy to open and close, and offer features such as locks and double glazing and seal effectively. These windows offer a timeless look and match almost any architectural aesthetic.

How do double glazed double hung windows enhance energy efficiency in a home?

Double glazed double hung windows enhance energy efficiency by creating a thermal barrier between your home and the outdoors. These windows have two layers of glass, separated by a sealed air gap, which significantly reduces heat transfer. This means less heat escapes in winter and less heat enters in summer, creating a more comfortable indoor environment and reduces your reliance on heating and cooling systems.

The energy savings can translate to lower energy bills and a smaller carbon footprint.

During summer, given the counter balance mechanism that sees the top and bottom sashes operate at the same time, this window style is ideal for promoting cross flow ventilation. When the sash is open, hot air is expelled through the top and cool breezes are promoted at the bottom.

Can double hung windows be customised to match different architectural aesthetics?

Double hung windows, particularly those crafted from aluminium, offer exceptional design flexibility.

At Rylock, we understand that every home is unique, and we offer a wide range of customisation options for our double hung windows. Talk to us about your specifications and we can let you know if double hung windows can be customised for your space.

You can also choose your preferred frame colours and glazing options to create a look that perfectly complements your home’s architectural style, whether it’s traditional, contemporary or somewhere in between.

Are double hung windows suitable for both traditional and modern homes?

Yes, double hung windows are incredibly versatile and can seamlessly blend with both traditional and modern architectural styles. Their classic design, characterised by two operable sashes that slide vertically, has been a staple in homes for centuries. However, modern advancements in materials and technology have given double hung windows a contemporary edge, making them a popular choice for new builds and renovations alike.

These windows are easy to open and close, and include modern security features.

What security features are included in Rylock’s double hung aluminium windows?

Rylock prioritises the safety and security of your home. Our double hung aluminium windows are equipped with multi-point locking systems that engage at various points along the frame to prevent forced entry. They can be locked open at a fixed point for trickle ventilation.

The robust aluminium construction further enhances security, offering a strong and durable barrier against intruders.

How do the ventilation options in double hung windows contribute to indoor air quality?

Double hung windows offer excellent ventilation control, contributing to a healthier indoor environment. The ability to open both the top and bottom sashes allows for natural cross-ventilation, promoting fresh air circulation and reduced humidity. This helps prevent mould growth, improve air quality and create a more comfortable living space.

How do double hung windows perform in different Australian climates?

Double hung windows are well-suited to various Australian climates thanks to their versatility and energy-efficient features:

  • Hot Climates: The ability to open both sashes allows for considerable ventilation and airflow, helping to cool your home naturally.
  • Cold Climates: Double glazing provides excellent insulation, minimising heat loss and keeping your home warm in winter.
  • Coastal Areas: Aluminium frames are resistant to corrosion, making them ideal for homes exposed to salt air and humidity.
Are double hung windows easy to clean and maintain?

Double hung windows are relatively straightforward when it comes to product care.

Double hung aluminium window frames require minimal upkeep and are resistant to rot, warping, and fading – resulting in long-lasting appeal.

What is the best material for double hung window frames?

Aluminium is a popular choice for double hung window frames due to its durability, strength and low maintenance requirements. It is resistant to corrosion and termites, making it ideal for the Australian climate.
