Recently the ASRC interviewed Sylvain, he has been a valued employee at Rylock for 5 and a half years after coming to Australia in 2014. He arrived by plane, came alone and had no family here. Late in 2014 Sylvain accessed the ASRC’s services after his friend told him about what they had to offer. He first used their humanitarian services, and then was supported by legal to get his visa application in and get work rights. Once he had work rights he was supported by English classes and the employment program. He volunteered for the ASRC in the kitchen during this time.

Sylvain was placed in his current role by the ASRC Employment Program given his background in boiler making and welding, so his current role as a Window Fabricator at Rylock was a great fit.

Rylock enjoys a strong relationship with the ASRC, where many people seeking asylum have been placed into roles.

THIS IS SYLVAIN’S STORY

Q. How did you first find out about ASRC?
A. I first heard about the ASRC through friends, a few of my friends told me about it.

Q. Tell me about your first experience with the ASRC?
A. It was good, it was really good because I was desperate. When I discovered I was so happy to know what they do. Happy that they give people an opportunity for a new beginning.

Q. How were you helped?
A. They helped me with accommodation, food, clothes, helped me with a lawyer for my case. I was depressed, I didn’t know what to do. Before ASRC I had no support. I arrived in Australia 2014 on a 3-month visa, I first came to ASRC in 2015. I came to Australia by plane. Felt really happy to be in Australia, and surprised. Worked in Cameroon as a welder and boiler maker for 10 years. I volunteered in the ASRC at the kitchen. I did English classes at the ASRC. Then came into contact with the employment program-I got taught how to interview, do resume and apply for jobs. First job in Australia was through the ASRC, that was just a casual role for a few days at a circus helping to pack-up after. The first service I used at the ASRC was the foodbank, I came once a week to get food. Then support with legal, they helped with visa application.

A. Before I didn’t have work rights. ASRC helped get me work rights and then got me a job.

Q. What support from ASRC did you get from employment?
A. Training on how to do a job interview. Really helpful. How to read how to understand. English class every day we had class, every morning. After went to employment program. They give a list to find a job, how to prepare and how to talk to the job interviewer. I gave them my resume, they looked at my skills and found me this job. She called Rylock and got me an interview. And then helped me prepare for the interview.

Q. What was it like when you first started working here?
A. My English wasn’t great but practically the job was really great. I worked hard and learned fast. It made me feel good to work, it’s less stress at home. When I first came here even though I didn’t have anything I had hope. I just needed someone to give me a chance so I could show what I can do.
